Key West, Fla December 26 1938
Dear friends,
Today we see on the almanac that it is December 6th and we are again so far that we have to think twice, take ourselves hard in the neck and make an effort to think on Christmas mail. There is not the last bit of Christmas mood (spirit, atmosphere) here. In Miami there were of course Christmas decorations in the big department stores. We were there to see the Christmas tree and Santa Claus and we were also there to Martin’s Evening Turkey at the Moller family and it was fun to see our old friends and acquaintances again but we were only one week in Miami. At the babies hospital there were only new faces and our only thought is to get away from USA and now we have reached the furthermost point, and next time we go to sea it is again with the enchanting West Indian Islands as destination and we can throw the compass overboard because Peter only needs to stick his nose in the air and smell rum. Rum and this time it will be Cuba and Christmas will probably be celebrated with a fat “Havanna” in the corner of the mouth in its birth town. Key West is an interesting town on the furthermost island on the tip of Florida. A fantastic road takes you from here to Miami. The one island tied together with the other by means of bridges but you rich people in Denmark probably don’t get impressed so easily. There is a row of undersea reefs alongside of all these islands and between the islands and the reefs there is enough depth in the water for us so we had a comfortable sail in beautiful water and could anchor every evening and have our peaceful good night sleep. There are not many places you can throw the anchor in the Atlantic Sea. Unfortunately, the Christmas package will be very much shrunken because we feel we are as broke as all other Americans. But we hope for better times, I think it is a long time since I have heard from Katermindegade but we hope that you are all right and we send you so many good wishes for the Christmas celebrations with good appetite for the goose and special cookies. How is it with the teeth this year, Valdemar? Is it going to be revenge eating? Or was it the stomach there was something wrong with? You have to make up double for it.
And now our loving greetings from yours Lars, Muse, Else, Peter and baby.
Our address is Mr. Axel Molter, Miami and they will send us your mail to Cuba.
