Esbjerg, Denmark 9/11/1934
Today it was a big day in Esbjerg harbor. The famous writer with the no less famous family in his yacht “Restmore” which is on a smaller Round-the-world cruise, cleared the docks and rounded the harbor mouth by motor with sails furled, since the so frightful North Sea in Copenhagen mostly resembled a millpond today. After the usual chat with quickly assembled admirers – of course, more admiring the “Mrs.” than the ship the whole family rushed up to the post office and received the news from the big city. – Thanks, and thank you for the pictures – they are very good, also thanks for the beautiful] painting of the landscape for the birthday. After looking: at the picture of the “Ships chancellor” and the “Junior mate” I decided that the Ships chancellor needed to spruce up a little and tomorrow I will exchange the masterpiece for a landscape. “Hvide sande” is an artificially through the sandbar-dug-harbor for small fishing boats. Otherwise everything is O.K., aboard. We go only slowly forward and stop into all the harbors we can possibly find – even the North Sea trip Thyboron – Esbjerg was interrupted by a stop in a nice little harbor “Mvide Sande” where we relaxed for a couple of days on the beach. The best harbor so far was “Viken”. It was a very nice place, Lars got acquainted with two small friends and the customs Officer invited him to try some nice big plums.
we also went swimming although now we have stopped with that. We have water enough all around us and a couple of drops from the tank to rub around the nose. We are very well received in all the harbors by different Yacht-clubs. we have been futured in “Grenga Tidente”. We go to bed nice and early. what we hear most over here is: “Such a little one, and then he is tied like a cow”. Although with this is meant Lars and not Peter.
The mad letter from Frederic came but I believe he has calmed down since I get a friendly one, maybe it is because I asked him to send money but he didn’t send any. Today we enjoy life in Esbjerg. It is the nicest sunshine and warm like summer. Both kids are asleep. The harbor is not very idyllic, dirty and full of fishing boats that make a terrible noise with their diesel motors, but the sun makes everything golden and so we are feel wonderful, if now the weather just will keep we will sail tomorrow and anchor in “Lister Dyb” and then in “Helgoland”. If there are any news in the papers about Knud Anderson or something like that we would be very happy if you would report on them. We have already talked about how much fun it will be to come home and tell you some real skipper stories but hopefully it won’t be for a while yet so they can be real hair-raising and now our loving greetings from yours
Anne – Lars – Peter – Else Dohm.
