When Words
aren’t enough©
From the Indians to the first settlers, to the
diversity of our nation today, everyone has come to regard
themselves as AMERICANS. Some go a little further and identify
themselves with their origin. There are Latin Americans, African
Americans, Chinese Americans, and the list goes on. It’s nice to
keep your roots but with all the struggles going on why not simply
call ourselves Americans?
Our early struggles, the growing pains, the
sheer thirst to become part of this country and reside in these
United States of America have made many a people set a course for
the "promised Land". This part of the world has become one of the
most sought-after destinations for peoples of all types. So, I ask
you again. What is an American? I say it’s all the above. Its the
purifying by fire and sweat. It’s what makes
our land so special. It’s
what we remember each 4th of July.
I read
about the flag, and what each fold represents. I will give you a
clue. It’s not the 13 colonies. There are many things about our
country, or traditions, and people that are staring us in the face
but we don't take the time to know our past. For only knowing our
past will we know our future. Ole Glory still flies and yes it still
takes a lot of blood, sweat and tears. It takes every American
pulling their weight and believing that they undoubtedly live in the
greatest country on the planet.
So, the next time you hear the star-spangled banner, see the
statue of liberty, look at the fireworks or hear a simple song sung
by Lee Greenwood. Be proud of who you are and what your country
stands for.
Now as for a piece of the folding of the flag
and the year 1776. This is what the 21-gun salute means. Go ahead;
add up the numbers in the year. History happens every day and
tomorrow will be history. Remember your past but look to a brighter
future this Fourth of July.
