The dollar bill ©
By Joseph P. Gimenez
2010 for the Red Hook Series
I once found a dollar bill laying in the sand
I picked it up, brushed it off and put it in my hand
As i carefully studied the face on this crisp new dollar bill
I thought of what i could buy at a store just over the hill
As i slowly walked to the store a beggar i did pass by
He looked so old and needy that it made me want to cry
I looked at him and then my hand and decided then and there
The things the beggar needed to mine did not compare
I stopped right in front of this tired looking man
His hands he stretched out in need of someone’s helping hand
I placed the dollar in his palm to which he gave a smile
It was all the money i did have since i was but a child
Money makes the world go round; I’ve heard this once before
It takes lots and lots of money across the sea and shore
The dollar i had within my hand i found he needed more.
It made me feel good to give it to him instead of at the store.
So, when you have a little change or whatever it may be
Remember there is someone that needs it more than me.
For with every good deed, you find that you can sleep sounder
each night.
For helping others less fortunate should bring us much delight.
