The Funeral ©
By Joseph P. Gimenez

Step by step you get closer
to the casket holding someone you knew.
With each step you get a
sense of calm that this person’s pains are through.
In life you knew him, but
could not bring yourself to believe
That two days before today,
you would be the one to grieve.
As you stand by the coffin
which is clean, crisp, and shiny
The body inside is as one in
a deep sleep which seems so timely
You remember the truck that
he drove which was far from being new,
You remember the days on
Sunday that he sat in the very first pew.
Everyone has a story and he
is no exception,
The preacher recalled all
his deeds and gave good reflection
You see this man was well
liked by all not because of fame, or wealth,
His character spoke volumes
of him, and so did the people with which he dealt.
Now gone from the stage is
someone we will all miss
His smile brought sunshine
and his words brought bliss
His days are no more but I’m
sure he carries on
For you see… the angels came
by that day, and in a blink, he was gone.
