Island Girl ©
By Joseph P. Gimenez
2010 for the Red Hook Series
Sitting under the shade with
your hair hanging down
The sun warms your face as your
skin turns to brown
You like the way the wind feels
on your face
As you lay down on your chair
and stare into space.
Island Girl you look like a dish
of ice cream on a sweltering day
And if I were to ask you out, I
know what you would say
You’d say that you have no time
for a man such as me
And lying on magens bay beach is
where you want to be.
I looked at her and could hardly
believe this beauty on the sand
My island is small I thought and
she isn’t what I planned
But I fell in love right then
and there with this beauty by the sea
And by hook or crook, I wanted
her for my wife to be.
I didn’t leave her even though
she said she’d rather be alone
I could have left but then again
all I had was an empty home
I needed someone like her to be
the one I chose for life
And no matter what the cost
would be, she was going to be my wife.
I asked her where she was from
and she gave me a quick reply
My mother gave birth to me and
that’s the reason why.
Not a hint of her home did she
give to me right then
But love takes time and it’s not
a game or pretend.
At least let know your name for
it’s you that I thirst.
She said her name was Sandy and
she shook my hand to leave
All I could do was look at her
and in my heart did I grieve.
Then to my amazement she turned
around and asked me for my name.
Its Pete I stuttered; my name is
Pete but to her it was just a game.
A game of love, of hide and seek
is what the Island girls play
They only want to know little of
the person with which they might stay.
She walked a little farther and
turned a second time,
Are you doing anything tonight,
Pete, would you want to go and dine?
Well knock me over I thought to
myself this girl may be for me,
For I am an Island boy you see,
and as happy could be.
Looks can be deceiving and they
say its only skin deep
But take my word my friend this
one I would keep
We had a great time Sandy and I
as we dined by candle light
And then I asked her at the door
If I could spend the night?
Well Pete, I would let you but
you know how island girls are
First, they have to know you
well before you get that far
So, ask me out again sometime
and we will have a real good time
I never met a man like you Pete,
and I want to make you mine.
How happy can a couple get as
Sandy and Pete became
They found true love upon a
beach just by playing a game
It’s the Thing Island people do
on this island in the Sun
And now you know from whence
they came, and how their love begun.
